Ellen Smith
I was born in Los Angeles and grew up in the San Fernando Valley. I discovered I had a special place in my heart for children when I started babysitting at the age of twelve. It was a precursor of things to come. I knew children would always be a part of my life.

I met and married Doug, my true love, for a lifetime. We raised two wonderful sons. And, in the midst of doing so, I attended Valley College and California State University, Northridge, and proceeded to teach for eighteen very joyful and fulfilling years.
My other passion, along with my family and teaching, is animals – all varieties, shapes, and sizes. The story in this book is based on an actual event. The Grandma Mimi character is based on my mother. I loved how much she and the family cared about the birds in her backyard. And my wish for all of you is that you may care deeply for the wildlife that surrounds you – whatever it may be and wherever you may find it.
